Tape reading: a beginner's guide
Before charts and indicators existed, traders read one thing: the tape — the running record of every executed trade. Tape reading is the oldest skill in the market, and on NSE index futures it still works — provided you have the tooling to keep up with the speed.
What "the tape" actually is
The tape is simply time and sales data: a chronological list of every trade that executes, with its timestamp, price and quantity. Every candle, every volume bar, every indicator you have ever used is a summary of this list. The tape is the source; everything else is compression.
The name comes from the physical ticker tape of the early 1900s — a paper strip that printed each transaction as it happened. Traders like Jesse Livermore built entire careers on reading the tape: watching the size of each print, the pace at which prints arrived, and whether price advanced easily or laboured against selling. They had no charts. They inferred the intent of large participants purely from how trades executed.
What tape readers look for
The mechanics have not changed in a century. A tape reader watches four things:
- Print size: are trades small retail-sized lots, or the large clips associated with institutional execution? A move carried by big prints has different character than one carried by dribbles.
- Pace: is the tape speeding up or drying out? Acceleration into a move shows participation; a stalling tape shows the move is running out of business.
- Aggressor side: each print either hit the bid (a seller crossed the spread) or lifted the ask (a buyer crossed the spread). These aggressor prints reveal which side is impatient — the closest thing the market has to a live demand-vs-supply meter (covered in depth in bid-ask imbalance).
- Behaviour at levels: the same prints mean different things at a day high, near VWAP, or at an open-interest wall. Heavy selling that fails to break a level is information; heavy selling in the middle of nowhere is mostly noise.
Tape reading in the algorithm era
A fair objection: if institutions slice their orders into small pieces through execution algorithms, does print size still mean anything? Individually, less than it used to. Collectively, more — because slicing changes the shape of the footprint, not its existence. A large participant working an order leaves a persistent, one-sided pattern of aggressor prints spread over minutes. Aggregated, that pattern is visible; a single print is not. This is why modern tape reading is done on classified, cumulative data rather than a scrolling window.
It is also why executed trades remain the most honest dataset in the market. Orders resting in the order book can be placed and pulled without consequence. A print cannot be un-printed — someone paid for it.
What the tape does — and does not — tell you
The tape is descriptive, not predictive. It shows what participants are doing right now: which side is aggressive, how much size is behind it, and whether a level is holding or failing under that pressure. It does not tell you what price will do next, and it does not tell you what to trade — that judgement, and that decision, is always yours.
