What is order flow trading?
Order flow trading means reading the market through actual executed trades and order-book changes — who is hitting bids, who is lifting asks, and how much size is behind each — instead of waiting for a candle to close and tell you afterwards.
The tape vs the chart
A candlestick is a summary. It compresses every trade in a five-minute window into four numbers — open, high, low, close — and throws the rest away. Order flow is the raw material the candle was made from: the individual prints, their size, and whether each one hit the bid (a seller crossing the spread) or lifted the ask (a buyer crossing the spread).
That distinction — bid-hit vs ask-lift — is called aggressor analysis, and it's the core of tape reading. Two identical green candles can be built from completely different flow: one from steady, confident lifting of the ask; the other from a thin drift with no real participation. The chart can't tell them apart. The tape can.
What order flow shows on NSE F&O
- Aggression: which side is crossing the spread — the demand-vs-supply pressure behind the move.
- Size: whether prints are retail-sized dribbles or the large clips associated with institutional execution.
- The book: how bid and ask depth is stacking, thinning or being pulled at each level (market depth / DOM).
- Behaviour at levels: whether aggressive selling into a level gets absorbed by passive size, or cuts straight through it.
Order flow is descriptive, not predictive
A common misunderstanding: order flow doesn't tell you what price will do. It tells you — with unusual precision — what market participants are doing right now. Whether a move is supported by genuine aggression and size, or running on fumes. What you do with that read is a separate decision, and it is always yours.
That's also the honest, compliant framing: platforms like TBTflow display order-flow analytics — pressure reads, aggression classification, book behaviour — as data. Not signals, not calls, not advice.
This is exactly what TBTflow's Order-Flow Pressure panel shows.
Every NSE tick classified as bid-hit or ask-lift in real time, distilled into a live demand-vs-supply read — alongside thirteen other panels on the same tape.
